Parsan: a nightmare road for travelers
The Chitral-Parsan road is one of the most freaking roads in the world. Located in the Parsan valley in Hindukush Chitral of Pakistan, the road is a nightmare for travelers. It’s literally blasted out of the side of the mountain and the smallest error can be fatal.
The surface of the road is gravel. The road is in dreadful condition and requires strong nerves to negotiate it. It’s certainly breathtaking and it has a fearsome reputation. The road runs along the river Lutkho and it runs through a place called Garam Chashma. It links Chitral, the capital of the Chitral District, situated on the western bank of the Chitral River, and Parsan, a beautiful valley of tehsil Garam chashma. This road tests the skill, and courage, of any driver. It’s definitely not for anyone suffering from vertigo or a fear of landslides.
The road is curvy and steep with little or no chance of error. The unpaved road throughout is so narrow that if a vehicle comes from the opposite side one has to reverse at least 1Km to find passage for the other vehicle to pass through.
The scariest part of the road is dubbed Parsan's tunnel of death by locals. It’s a section extremely narrow cut straight through the mountain. 4x4 vehicles only. This track can get very muddy and slippery after rain making it challenging to get through. During and after a storm the road may be impassable, even with a four-wheel-drive vehicle. The road becomes narrower and grades get more difficult every time. The beauty of this track is that it’ll take you from 4k feet to 10k feet in a matter of a few miles. So, imagine the inclines.
چترال-پرسان سڑک دنیا کی سب سے خوفناک سڑکوں میں سے ایک ہے۔ پاکستان کے ہندوکش چترال کی وادی پارسان میں واقع یہ سڑک مسافروں کے لیے ایک ڈراؤنا خواب ہے۔ یہ لفظی طور پر پہاڑ کے کنارے سے اڑ گیا ہے اور سب سے چھوٹی غلطی مہلک ہوسکتی ہے۔
سڑک کی سطح بجری ہے۔ سڑک خوفناک حالت میں ہے اور اس پر بات چیت کے لیے مضبوط اعصاب کی ضرورت ہے۔ یہ یقینی طور پر دم توڑنے والا ہے اور اس کی ایک خوفناک ساکھ ہے۔ یہ سڑک دریائے لُٹکھو کے ساتھ گزرتی ہے اور گرم چشمہ نامی جگہ سے گزرتی ہے۔ یہ دریائے چترال کے مغربی کنارے پر واقع ضلع چترال کے صدر مقام چترال اور تحصیل گرم چشمہ کی ایک خوبصورت وادی پرسان کو جوڑتا ہے۔ یہ سڑک کسی بھی ڈرائیور کی مہارت اور ہمت کا امتحان لیتی ہے۔ یہ یقینی طور پر کسی ایسے شخص کے لیے نہیں ہے جو چکر کا شکار ہو یا لینڈ سلائیڈنگ کا خوف ہو۔
سڑک خمیدہ اور کھڑی ہے جس میں غلطی کا بہت کم یا کوئی امکان نہیں ہے۔ پوری کچی سڑک اتنی تنگ ہے کہ اگر کوئی گاڑی مخالف سمت سے آتی ہے تو اسے دوسری گاڑی کے گزرنے کے لیے راستہ تلاش کرنے کے لیے کم از کم 1 کلومیٹر کا رخ کرنا پڑتا ہے۔
سڑک کے سب سے خوفناک حصے کو مقامی لوگوں نے پارسان کی موت کی سرنگ کا نام دیا ہے۔ یہ ایک انتہائی تنگ حصہ ہے جو سیدھا پہاڑ سے کٹا ہوا ہے۔ صرف 4x4 گاڑیاں۔ بارش کے بعد یہ ٹریک بہت کیچڑ اور پھسلن والا ہو سکتا ہے جس سے گزرنا مشکل ہو جاتا ہے۔ طوفان کے دوران اور اس کے بعد سڑک ناقابل گزر ہو سکتی ہے، یہاں تک کہ چار پہیوں والی گاڑی کے ساتھ بھی۔ سڑک تنگ ہوتی جاتی ہے اور گریڈز ہر وقت مشکل ہوتے جاتے ہیں۔ اس ٹریک کی خوبصورتی یہ ہے کہ یہ چند میلوں میں آپ کو 4k فٹ سے 10k فٹ تک لے جائے گا۔ تو، جھکاؤ کا تصور کریں.
